Dungeons and Dragons - Epilepsy Myths
Epileptic fits, or more accurately, seizures can be dramatic, and to many people, strange and frightening. Perhaps this is so because it doesn't happen as often and as openly as, say, sneezing. When something out of the ordinary happens, and it happens to a person very much like you and I, when that person exhibits muscle contraction or spasm leading to involuntary hand and leg 'folding' (as a result of muscle contraction), foaming at the mouth, rolling of the eyes, you'd be frightened. I would too.
Sometimes, people just do not know what to do or how to help when a person has an epileptic seizure. I once had a seizure at the entrance to a busy suburban shopping mall around 5 pm. I was then waiting for my friend. As my friend told me later, while I was writhing on the floor, suffering from a full-blown Grand Mal seizure, a kind lady had raised her hand over me in prayer and asked that the devil to be banished from my body. Apparently, to some, an epileptic seizure is a sign of demon possession. So also, over the centuries, many beliefs have developed about epilepsy, most of which are myths.
To dispel some of these myths, I can do no better than to refer you to sources on the World Wide Web that discusses, debunks and clarifies some of them:
